02/24/2007 - Bears open 2007 season with 14-13 win at Notre Dame de Namur
Sophomore Al Maione netted the game winning goal with 2:16 left as the NYIT men's lacrosse team opened the 2007 season with a 14-13 win at Notre Dame de Namur university this afternoon.
Sophomore Matt Messina scored the games first goal and the two teams traded goals through the first quarter, which ended in a 3-3 tie. Jake Delillo and Kevin Hennesey opened the second quarter with scores and after the Argos Keegan Davidson netted a score, Delillo closed out the period with his second score to give the Bears a 6-4 lead at the half.
NYIT would outscore the Argos 5-2 in the third period, getting two scores from Hennesey and another two from sophomore Austin Carino, to take a commanding 11-7 lead.
The Argos responded by scoring four of the first five goals in the fourth period to pull within 12-11 with 11 minutes to play. Carino netted his fourth score of the game off of a feed from Messina a minute later to give the Bears some breathing room. The Argos' weren't finished though, scoring back-to-back goals in eight seconds to tie the game at 13-13 with just over four minutes remaining. Maione followed with his unassisted game-winning goal and the Argos last second shot was saved by sophomore Dan Goosk to preserve the Bears win.
Hennesey and Carino each scored four goals while Delillo added three scores in the win. Goosk came up big in the net for the Bears, recording 19 saves. Tim Campeau led all players with five goals for the Argos, while Mike Ferrari made 10 saves in the net for the Argos.
