LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena men's lacrosse team used eight goals by sophomore attackman Matt Girsh (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) to get past VMI 16-10 this afternoon in Lexington, Va. Senior co-captain Matt Donovan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) chipped in 10 points in the Saints first league victory of the season. With the win, Siena reaches the .500 plateau standing 2-2 on the year.

The stingy Saints' defense held the Keydets to just two goals in the first half thanks to nine saves by freshman goaltender Brent Herbst (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK). Herbst tallied 12 saves in 60 minutes of action and recorded his first win in net for the Saints.

Siena entered intermission with a 5-2 advantage. Donovan and Girsh recorded two goals apiece, while freshman midfielder Shaun Dunn (Amityville, N.Y./Chaminade) put in a man-up goal with 11:15 remaining in the second. Dunn also added an assist on the afternoon.

The Saints were dominant on the offensive end in the second half as they outscored VMI 11-8. With 2:02 left in the third quarter, junior Matt Harrison notched a goal to bring the Keydets within two (7-5). However, five consecutive Siena goals over the next 4:09 opened the game up giving the Saints a 12-5 lead.

Siena added four more late goals to cruise to the six-goal victory. Freshman attackman Ryan Duggan (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) registered three points, while Tim Rau (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) managed a goal in the contest. Chris Viviano (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Chaminade), a sophomore defenseman, anchored the Siena defensive unit and held the Keydets top scorer scoreless.

With the win, the Saints improve to 1-0 in league play. Siena returns to action on Wednesday when they take on Saint John's at Siena Field. Face-off is set for 3 p.m.
