Big Cat Bob Catala has 1 and 1 vs #2 Dowling
STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Junior midfielder Nick Cotter (Whitby, Ontario) scored five goals to pace the Golden Lions as Dowling used a first-quarter scoring outburst to get past the Bentley men's lacrosse team, 15-9, on Tuesday night in non-conference action at LaValle Stadium. The Golden Lions, ranked second in the latest Division II poll, improve to 2-1, while the Falcons even their record at 1-1.
Dowling pulled away early with a 7-1 advantage in the first quarter. Sophomore attack Chris Woods (Duxbury, Mass/Sandwich HS & Tilton School) scored early to tie the game at 1-1 before the Golden Lions before scoring seven unanswered goals, including three goals from Cotter, to take an 8-1 lead midway through the second quarter.
Sophomore attack Andy Curtis (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford HS) helped the Falcons make a charge late in the second, scoring three goals in the final six minutes before halftime, combined with a tally from senior attack Bob Catala (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Yorktown HS) to cut the lead to 10-5 at the half.
Bentley's defense slowed down Dowling in the second half, but the Golden Lions held off the Falcons for the remainder of the contest. Freshman attack Kevin Gould (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS & Phillips Academy) scored his first collegiate goal for Bentley in the third quarter and senior midfielder Craig Cormier (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor HS) added another to end the third with the Golden Lions up, 13-7.
Dowling opened the fourth quarter with a pair of goals before the Falcons scored twice to close out the game. Gould assisted on both goals in the final frame to tally three assists in the game, as freshman midfielder Evan Bagley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth HS) and sophomore midfielder Andrew Smulligan (Lowell, Mass./Lowell HS & Tilton School) scored their first goals of the season.
Sophomore goalie Kris Dambach (Chester, N.J./West Morris Central HS) made 16 saves for Bentley while junior Nick Tracey (Farmingville, N.Y.) stopped seven shots for the Golden Lions.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday for their home opener, hosting Saint Anselm for a Northeast-10 Conference tilt at 1:00 p.m.
