No. 1 Salisbury Wins 36 of 37 at F/O in Rout of Hood

SALISBURY, Md. - The outcome of Wednesday's men's lacrosse game was never in doubt for top-ranked Salisbury University as they defeated Hood College 29-5 in a Capital Athletic Conference game at Sea Gull Stadium. The win extends the numerous winning streaks the Sea Gulls hold but another streak began and lasted for over three quarters against Hood.

Salisbury (5-0, 2-0 CAC) won the game's first 34 face-offs before Hood broke the string a minute into the fourth quarter. There is not an official NCAA stat for consecutive face-offs won in a game. The single-game record for most face-offs won is 34 held by Army set in 1987. That is the Division I record as there is not a Division III or II record like that in the official NCAA records book. Salisbury finished the day 36-for-37 on face-offs (97.2 win percentage).

SU senior Ryan Brown (one goal) was a perfect 19-for-19 on face-offs while sophomore Ryan Finch (one goal) went 17-for-18 against the Blazers. Hood's Dominique Shorter (one goal) won the only face-off for the Blazers at the 14:02 mark in the fourth quarter.

The Sea Gulls jumped on the Blazers early as junior Kylor Berkman (three goals, two assists) scored the game's first goal 54 seconds into the first quarter. Senior Matt Hickman (four goals) was quick to follow as he scored his first of three consecutive goals with 13:22 left to play in the opening quarter. SU would take an 8-0 lead before Hood's Jason Anderson (two goals, one assist) would respond with an unassisted goal.

SU struggled to stop the Blazers' shot attempts in the second period as the Gulls did not record a save and allowed four goals off five shots. Salisbury scored six goals of their own in the second quarter to take a 16-5 lead into half.

The Sea Gulls came out of the break and held Hood scoreless the rest of the way as the maroon and gold outscored the Blazers, 13-0. Salisbury held a commanding 61-9 advantage in shots as Hood could only muster two shots in the second half. SU did not slow down on offense as junior Patrick Bonanno put in his third goal of the game just 35 seconds into the third quarter. Sophomore Mike Winter was the fourth Sea Gull to reach three or more goals as he scored his third and final mark at the 8:05 mark in the third quarter. That goal came 13 seconds after freshman Kyle Piper's first goal of the season.

Four other Sea Gulls scored two goals on the day including seniors Greg Titus (one assist) and Bruce Richardson (one assist) along with freshmen Spencer Smith and Reid Mayberry. Four different Sea Gulls recorded two assists in the win including senior Kevin Kustron (one goal), juniors Matt Berry and Ryan Curran (one goal) and sophomore Brian Schuster. Salisbury played its entire bench as five different Sea Gulls scored their first goals of the season.

SU is a perfect 92-0 in CAC play, including tournament games, and have won 73 straight conference regular-season games. The Sea Gulls have won 67 consecutive regular-season games and are 63-0 at home since 2003. Salisbury has also won 28 straight games since the beginning of last season.

The Gulls will return to action Sunday, March 9, as they host Ohio Wesleyan University at 1:00 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.
