#3 Cortland Downs #18 Western New England in Opener
CROSS RIVER, N.Y. - The nationally third-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team opened its season with a 15-7 win versus 18th-ranked Western New England College Saturday afternoon at John Jay High School in Cross River, N.Y.
Freshman Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) collected four goals and two assists in his first collegiate game and sophomore Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields) scored a career-best four goals and added an assist for the Red Dragons (1-0). Sophomore Chris DeLuca (Sayville) contributed two goals and three assists and won 12-of-14 faceoffs and senior Joey Morgan (Putnam Valley) registered two goals and one assist. Senior goalie Matt Hipenbecker (Mountain Lakes, NJ) made seven saves.
Brody Savoie and Tim Santye led Western New England with three goals each and Jared Pabis added a goal. Ben Barlow stopped 15 shots.
Tota and DiStefano gave the Red Dragons an early 2-0 lead with goals just 20 and 25 seconds into the game, respectively. After Savoie netted his first of the game at the 10 minute, 27 second mark of the first quarter, DiStefano answered six seconds later with his second of the game and Cortland added two late goals to lead 5-1 after the opening quarter.
The Golden Bears closed the gap to 5-4 with a three-goal run to open the second quarter. Savoie netted an unassisted goal at 10:33 and Santye scored back-to-back goals at 8:54 and 7:03. The Red Dragons, however, ended the first half with goals from DeLuca and Morgan to take a 7-4 lead at the intermission and took control of the game with a 5-0 advantage in the third quarter for a 12-4 lead. The teams split six goals in the fourth quarter for the final of 15-7.
The Red Dragons outshot Western New England, 39-26, had a 37-30 advantage in ground balls and won 15-of-25 faceoffs in the game.
