No. 15 Western New England Tops Bates

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's lacrosse team suffered a tough loss in their home opener Thursday against the No. 15-ranked Western New England College Golden Bears.

The Golden Bears' (1-1) Scott Kukis opened the scoring just 45 seconds into the game with his first of two goals on the day, but the Bobcats rallied late in the first period and scored two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead into the second period. Junior Nick Sampson (Yarmouth, Maine) tied the game on his first of two goals on the day on an assist from senior Sam Geller (Berkeley, Calif.) with 6:36 remaining in the first period. Just over a minute later, junior Dave Barrett (Chatham, N.J.) gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game when he scored unassisted.

In the second period, the contest remained tight with the only scoring coming on an unassisted goal from Western New England's Jared Pabis with 10:38 to go in the half. The teams fought back and forth looking to gain an advantage before the break, but the score remained locked at 2-2 at halftime.

In the second half, Bates (0-3) rallied back after two consecutive goals from WNEC's J. Michael Nardella and Patrick White at 9:46 and 6:12, respectively. The Golden Bears enjoyed their two-goal lead for less than two minutes, however, as Sampson scored his second goal of the game to tighten the gap to 4-3.

Down 4-3 going into the final period, the Bobcats came out firing. Just a minute into the final period, Bates sophomore midfielder Rory Cosgrove (Pittsburgh, Pa.) beat Golden Bears goalie Brewster Knowlton to tie the game on an assist from Barrett. Play went back and forth with each team unable to find the back of the net until WNEC's Brody Savoie gave his team the lead again. The Golden Bears would not relinquish their lead again, pushing their lead to two goals, 6-4, on Kukis' second goal of the game with 7:39 left.

The Bobcats played tough the final seven minutes of the game, and despite some good offensive pressure, they could not manage to pull any closer. A pair of first-year goalies played fantastic games between the pipes, with the Golden Bears' Knowlton recording 11 saves and the Bobcats' Adam Schraff (Glyndon, Md.) giving a tremendous effort with 15 saves in the game.

Bates plays at Williams College in a conference match-up on Sunday at 12 p.m.
