Chaminade Rallies to Victory
YORKTOWN, NY – The opportunity for Yorktown to once again climb back into Saturday’s game was literally wide open.
A clearing miscue left the Chaminade net unattended. Goalie John Connors was too far away from the crease, to save the shot attempt that would cut his team’s lead to just one.
But sliding in just in time was Thomas Lukacovic, to not only stop the ball, but Yorktown too.
The rebound deflected to a Chaminade player, starting an unsettled situation. Brandan DeTommaso passed up the field to Matthew Kavanagh who split two defenders with a highlight reel-swim dodge and scored to make it 10-7 with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Any chance the home Huskers had to come back was buried in that one sequence.
“I think it definitely changed momentum,” Kavanagh said. “I could feel a difference after the goal.”
The CHSAA league power rolled from that point on, scoring four more unanswered goals en route to a 14-8 win in a battle between two of the tri-states’ top programs. The Flyers snapped their three game losing streak in the annual meeting and tied the all-time series at four games apiece.
Chaminade (10-1) – the No. 3 ranked team in the MSG Varsity Tri-State Poll – scored the first two goals of the game and took a 3-1 lead.
Yorktown (6-4) responded with four straight goals to take a 5-3 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. Towson-bound Justin Mabus scored twice during the run. Fellow senior Ty Schuldt had a hat-tick, giving the midfielder 10 goals in three games since returning from injury.
The Flyers would score four consecutive goals of their own and lead 7-6 at halftime.
After Yorktown’s Nick Mariano scored to open up the second half to tie the score at 7-7, Chaminade scored seven unanswered, including Kavanagh’s game-changer. The Flyers dominated possession in the second half because of Sean Mahon’s work on faceoffs.
“We have a good record,” Ryan Lukacovic said. “But we were executing the way we wanted to. Today we did.”
Kavanagh scored four goals and added an assist. The Notre Dame bound-senior now has a team-high 29 goals on the season. Lukacovic – one of the handful of sophomores to ever play for the Chaminade varsity team – had a team-high six points on two goals and four assists.
GAME NOTES: Yorktown has a tough Section 1 slate this upcoming week with Somers and the Murphy Cup against Lakeland/Panas. The Huskers still have non-sectional meetings with St. Anthony, MSG Varsity’s No. 5 team and Wilton… Chaminade has non-league games against No. 4 Manhansset and No. 10 Delbarton before the CHSAA championship.
