YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, NY – Yorktown’s streak is still going strong. For the thirty-second consecutive year, the Huskers are playing for a Section 1 title.

No. 2 Yorktown routed No. 6 Tappan Zee, 18-4, in the semifinals of the Section 1 Class B playoffs at Yorktown.

“Today was a bump in the road on our way to our first goal of winning the section championship,” senior defensive-midfielder Alex Poritzky said.

Yorktown (11-7) has only lost three times in the title game since 1980; in 1997 and 2010 to Lakeland/Panas and in 2006 to its next opponent John Jay-Cross River. The Huskers take on the defending champs on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Suffern Middle School.

“It’s really exciting to me,” senior midfielder Ty Schuldt said. “It’s going to be big playing against them.”

On Monday, the Huskers pounded the cage early and often. Tappan Zee’s Cian Lynch stopped the first three shots he saw before succumbing to Yorktown’s offensive juggernaut, allowing eight goals in the final eight minutes of the opening quarter.

Yorktown dominated possession — winning all nine first-quarter faceoffs and the groundball battle 12-1 — and fired 12 shots in as many minutes.

Frankie Fusco scored four straight goals in the first quarter and finished with six. Nick Mariano tallied the final three goals of the first half and had four goals overall. Ty Schuldt notched a hat-trick and Justin Mabus distributed three assists.

By the fourth quarter, Yorktown's 10 starters were standing together on the sidelines watching reserves finish out the game.

“The difference from last year is how hard we’ve hustled,” Poritzky said. “No matter the score, we worked our butts off. We haven’t gotten outworked like last season.”

Tappan Zee (14-5) finally broke through in the second half, when Devlin Clarke found Conor Reeves for a transition goal. The Dutchmen advanced to the semifinals after picking up some revenge in a rematch against Nyack in the previous round.

Bryan Wenke scored twice. Brendan Bell and Conor Reeves each had a goal and an assists.

Yorktown and John Jay entered the season as preseason favorites and squared off in the first regular contest of the season, with the Huskers winning 12-7. Almost three months later, the two powers will battle for the top spot.

“I think our team has evolved, I think our opponent has evolved since the first game,” said Schuldt, who excelled at the draw. “We’re ready for them.”

GAME NOTES: After competing in Class A from 2005-2010, Yorktown is going for its first Class B crown since 2004. Coincidently, five of Yorktown’s six state titles were won in Class B… Yorktown has had a relatively easy road to the championship game, while John Jay had it a bit tougher. In the quarterfinals, the Indians defeated Rye, who was riding an 11-game winning streak and then beat top-seeded Somers in overtime on the road in the semifinals.

Keys to the Game
1. Shot Efficiency: Yorktown scored on 8 of 12 shots in the first quarter, all of which were on goal.

2. Playing Keep-Away: In the first quarter, the Huskers dominated faceoffs (winnings 9 of 9) and the groundball battles (12-1).
