Yorktown (4-0) cruised to an 11-8 win over host Fallston (MD) on Saturday to stay undefeated on the year. The Huskers led 8-2 in the middle of the third quarter and 10-5 in the fourth before Fallston (1-5) managed to make it respectable late in the game.
Drexel-bound senior attackman Frank Fusco led the way for Yorktown with three goals. Marquette-bound attackman Conor Gately added two goals and four assists. Connor Vercruysse (2G), Nick Mariano (2G), Joey Sialiano (1G), Danny Manning (1G) and Brian Quigley (1A) rounded out the Huskers' offensive production.
Sophomore goalie Austin Graham — starting just his second career game in net — made 11 saves. Manning was spectacular at the faceoff X, winning 16 of his 17 draws.
The Huskers were whistled for seven penalties overall. Oddly, six of them were by offensive players. Fallston scored three of its eight goals on extra-man opportunities.
“(Fallston) worked hard and just forced us into some slashes,” Yorktown coach Dave Marr said. “Their goalie was very good and he had a lot of saves. But we played well besides the penalties.”
Yorktown closes out its five-game road trip with a pair of games against Long Island powerhouses.
On Tuesday, the Huskers face Chaminade, which is coming off an upset win over St. Anthony's in its last game on April 5. The Friars entered that game as the No. 1-ranked team in the MSG Varsity Tri-State Top 14 boys lax poll.
“(Chaminade) is always a tough matchup,” Marr said. “They always come to play. They just beat St. Anthony’s, 6-5. We’ll watch some tape and get ready.”
The Huskers dropped last year's game against Chaminade, 14-8. Dating back to 2004, the two teams have played seven times. Yorktown holds a slight 4-3 advantage in the recent series.
On Saturday, Yorktown will square off against Smithtown West, which edged the Huskers, 9-8, last season. Yorktown went 0-4 against Long Island teams in 2011.
