The banner atop Yorktown lacrosse's website says it all: Home of the six-time NYS champs and 36-time Section 1 champs.
Make that 37-time section champs. And now the chase for a seventh NYS title really begins.
The top-seeded Huskers (14-5) continued their section-wide dominance on Thursday at White Plains High School, cruising to a 13-3 win over No. 6-seeded Byram Hills in the Class B final.
Yorktown will take on the Section 9 winner in the regional semifinals on May 28. The regional final against Section 2 is slated for May 31 at SUNY Albany and the state semis against the Long Island winner is June 4 at Hofstra.
All these dates matter for a team on a mission.
"We've been here before and it's the fourth time in a row," All-American senior attackman Connor Vercruysse said. "We are really happy about it, but we are ready to go to work the next week."
Vercruysse powered the Huskers with three goals and one assist. Nick Del Bene (3G), Kris Alvarado (2G, 1A) and Nick Bonitatibus (2G, 1A) rounded out another strong offensive performance. The Huskers are averaging 13.25 goals during their current four-game winning streak.
Yorktown jumped out to an early 4-0 first-quarter lead before a roll of thunder delayed the game 30 minutes. The Huskers didn't miss a beat after play resumed, pumping in five more goals to take a commanding 9-0 lead into the half.
"It's a section final," said Vercruysse, who moved into fifth on Yorktown's all-time career goals list with 165. "We've been here before and we always come out hard. The beginning of the game is the most important. You have to come out and finish your shots and that's what we did."
It marked Yorktown's fourth straight sectional title and 13th since 2000. Syracuse-bound senior defenseman Austin Fusco has been a starter on all four teams.
"You have such high expectations coming from Yorktown," Fusco said. "If you lose a section final, your year was kind of junky. I don't think about (all the titles) too much as long as we get to our goal at the end of the year. That's all that matters."
The Bobcats (15-5), who shocked No. 2-seeded Somers in the semis, were making their first finals appearance since 2011. They were only outscored 4-3 in the second half, showing some fight and pride down the stretch. Sophomore goalie Wes Cutler was an undeniable bright spot, coming up with 22 saves as the Huskers peppered him throughout all 48 minutes of action.
"(Yorktown) is a top team in the section," said Bobcats first-year coach Jim Ardizone. "We tried to mix it up a bit and get more physical to try and take them out of their game a little bit. We did for one moment in the second or third quarter to make it a little more physical game, but that was just for a short time. They controlled the pace of the game."
Yorktown will now set its eyes toward the ultimate goal: a state title. The Huskers haven't hoisted that plaque since 2003.
Two-time defending state champ Garden City was knocked out by Manhasset in the Section 8 semifinals, making it a wide-open field heading into the NYS tournament.
So, what's it gonna take for the green and white to end up on top again?
"Keep working hard, stayed focused and take it one game at a time," Fusco said. "There isn't anything more to it. We've been so close in years past but I have one more final shot at it."
If all goes according to plan, Yorktown will need to make one more edit to its website.
