Yorktown's boys lacrosse team began its annual state tournament run in convincing fashion on Wednesday at Lakeland High School.
The Huskers (15-5) jumped out to a 12-2 first-quarter lead on Section 9's Cornwall (13-5) and cruised to a lopsided 23-3 victory in the NYS Class B regional semis. Yorktown will take on undefeated Albany Academy of Section 2 in Saturday's regional final at SUNY Albany at 3:30 p.m.
"You have to let (the other team) know we are going to dominate the entire game and that's what we did today," Huskers senior attackman Connor Vercruysse said of the commanding performance.
Vercruysse led the offensive onslaught with five goals and four assists. He has a team-high 61 goals on the season and 170 for his career, putting him just 12 shy of the program's all-time scoring record held by Kevin Interlicchio ('10).
Yorktown coach Dave Marr has worked with Vercruysse since he was in middle school, witnessing his star player's development every step of the way.
"The potential was there, but he has worked very hard for it, too," Marr said. "He has worked very hard and you can see how he transformed his body from a chubbier little kid to a big strong man. He's worked hard for it and it's good to see."
To his credit, Vercruysse has repeatedly said that he's more interested in team goals, namely winning the Huskers' seventh state title in program history. He didn't even take much stock in being named an All-American for the second straight season.
"I'm honored, but it means nothing unless we win at the end of the year," said Vercruysse, who will play at Rutgers next season.
Nick Del Bene (3G), Nick Bonitatibus (2G, 1A), Luke Palmadesso (2G, 2A), Ryan Baker (2G, 2A), Justin Cavallo (2G, 1A) and Logan Peters (2G, 1A) rounded out Yorktown's robust offensive effort. Max Costello (1G), Michael Robertson (1A) and Jose Boyer (2A) also recorded their first career points on varsity.
In a wide open Class B field, Yorktown has as good a chance as ever to end the season in a dog pile at Hofstra. They are just three wins away from making it a reality.
"Now that it's playoffs, it's really crunch time," Vercruysse said. "It's just crazy and we talk about it every day that we just need to enjoy every single second. That's what we are going to do and hopefully we can get it done this year."
